HIV and AIDS

The problem of HIV and Aids is widespread throughout the countries of Africa. In the absence of prevention, treatment and care efforts the disease is expected to keep on spreading. The people of Africa need to be provided with the information and facilities to prevent the rising death toll. It is essential that both the communities of Africa and overseas NGO's , such as Transform Africa, work together so that local organisations and their communities are provided with proper informaiton and education about HIV and Aids. Projects by Transform Africa work to provide the support and encouragement to the local organisations so that they may be able to effectively communicate information about reducing HIV transmission, improving sexual reproductive health rights and provide the individuals of their community with a confidential and informative service.

Our current project is empowering the communities of Tanzania and Zambia to fight HIV and Aids.

This is a four year project working in the Iringa Municipality in Tanzania and the Mpika District in Zambia aiming to, firstly, change behaviour and attitudes towards the disease in the hope of making communities more aware and thereby reducing the impact of HIV/Aids, and, secondly, enable local organisations to provide the health services and support needed by those who are affected by the disease. In particular, the project will work with women, people affected with HIV/ AIds and poor families caring for Aids patients and orphans.

We will be working in partnership with the Mufindi Environmental Trust and the Development Organisation for People's Empowerment. There are three main areas of activity:

1) develop local knowledge and awareness to reduce the discrimination against members of the community who are affected by HIV/ Aids.

2) support for local organisations to enable access to anti-retroviral drugs

3) provide funds to give seed-corn loans to poor and other disadvantaged people to enable them to increase their economic stability.
