Case Studies
Supporting NGOs on the Transform programme
Transform Africa and its partners in Africa have supported over 120 local NGOs on its Transform programme. Below are the views of four of the NGOs that completed the programme.
Case Study 1: Personal as well as organisational empowerment
ABC is a local NGO in Kenya involved in youth activities. Transform Network member Iceberg carried out an assessment of their organisation and worked closely with them through a two-year accompaniment. Among the areas they worked together on were strategic planning and governance.
After the organisational assessment exercise a strategy development and planning exercise was undertaken with the assistance of Transform. Many team dynamics emerged, particularly in the areas of governance and the role of the Board. The group became very empowered and started to question and unhelpful Board Chairman, whose values contradicted those of the organisation. As a consequence, the Chairman left and members were able to elect a new Board and Chair.
The organisation has also realised the importance of reaching clear agreements with northern partners, based on memorandums of understanding, and is better able to negotiate terms.
One of the participants said, after the strategy development process "What we have learned over this planning period is very helpful for me and my family because I have realised that I have a lot of strengths and opportunities that I never realised I have."
Case Study 2: Demystifying monitoring & evaluation (M&E)
Organisation XYZ is another Kenyan NGO on the Transform programme, working with pastoral communities to help them improve their livelihoods.
XYZ had been using a monitoring framework to which they had been introduced, without consultation, by another funder. This process had resulted in a lack of understanding by staff and communities of the M&E system and a feeling that it added to the staff workload.
As part of its accompaniment support activities, Transform helped them develop a participatory impact-monitoring plan for the programme that they were designing for one of the communities. They developed the monitoring plan and indicators together with Board members, programme staff and community representatives. This removed the myth that monitoring is the work of project staff alone, it is the joint effort of staff, Board and community members. This enabled them to improve the monitoring framework.
Following the introduction of the new system, one of the participants in the workshop said "This framework is so easy now we can do it even without external support. The language is simplified and anyone in the community can use the new M&E framework without problems."
Case Study 3: Financial sustainability
ZZZ is a Zambian NGO that participated in the second phase of the Transform programme, supported by Transform Network member Development Associates (DA) Zimbabwe.
Local communities in Zambia and Zimbabwe were suffering a lot of hardships due to recent severe drought conditions. ZZZ was moved to assist - launching appeals on radio and TV. Its challenge to the international and local community was remarkable and this paid huge dividends.
Through this appeal it was able to raise money from Oxfam to support groups with small-scale irrigation projects. It also raised over 3,000 tonnes of maize and further donations of cash from the World Food Programme. ZZZ has grown from a little-known organisation with relatively weak finances into an internationally recognised NGO, a local success story.
Presently ZZZ is engaged in another fundraising drive with the aim of "creating a basket of free money and sustainable resources which removes donor pressure" according to the Director of the organisation. Through this they have already acquired property rental of 5 hectares farm with warehouse facility, guesthouse accommodation, functions' service and meeting venue. Together with fishing rigs and a boat giving them a monthly income of over 10,000.
Case Study 4: Organisation sustainability
DDD is an NGO working with pastoral communities in the semi-arid areas of Northern Kenya.
"We support and work with the community to address issues of livelihood affecting them. Our engagement with Transform programme dates back to October 1998 when, with the support of Oxfam GB, we joined the two years programme.
At the time of engaging with Transform we were a volunteer group, comprised of a few local professionals who had come together to address the plight of our people through voluntary work. Our participation in the programme helped us to graduate into an GNO that now operates across much of the District.
We are a recognised development actor in the region; an effective organisation with a governing Board, separate from management, well-developed organisational policies and systems. As a result of Transform interventions we have attracted funding support from bilateral and multilateral agencies such as USAID and the European Union.
The remarkable outcomes of our involvement in the Transform programme include outreach to a larger population, clearer focus and direction of our programmes, which has led to increased impact. Using the winning resources skills and resources acquired from Transform programme interventions we mobilised resources to construct and equip our own office premises. We now operate from our own building which is a big step towards our financial sustainability."
